In February of 2015 I was asked to teach a private workshop for two students, using a studio facility in Lexington, Virginia. In past years I’d done a lot of work in western Virginia and eastern to central West Virginia, using large and ultra-large format film intended for contact printing in platinum/palladium. It would be easy to spend extra time after the workshop and return to working in this area, but my small station wagon was going to be pretty full of workshop equipment with little room for the ultra-large camera gear. Working the same territory again, but in the manner of my off-topic, digital capture color approach from the drive-in trip, seemed like a sensible, and interesting, idea. In the fall of 2016 I found an excuse to return to the same areas for more shooting.
In 2007 and 2008 I made frequent trips to eastern and central Pennsylvania, working on three different long term photography projects. A fourth project developed itself along the way—color photographs of randomly encountered subjects, “off-topic” from the main projects.
In 2020 Camerawork Gallery invited me to show thirty of these off-topic pictures at their space in Scranton. This web gallery includes those thirty plus twenty more that I would have shown if there had been enough room for them.
A collection of early work—photographs from a small town in southeastern Pennsylvania, from 1974.
More old work—pictures from a traveling carnival, from the mid 1980s. Thanks to digital imaging I’m finally able to print these Kodachrome originals the way I wanted to thirty-five years ago.
